ADULT: Wingspan 28-35mm.  A typical Footman with the wings folded flat over the back when at rest.  The forewings are greenish-grey with a leading yellow stripe. The hindwings are a striking yellow and noticeable when in flight. LARVA: The larvae feed on various lichens. It pupates in a cocoon in a bark crevice. BEHAVIOUR:  Attracted to light and can be seen throughout the day resting on low herbage and fenceposts. HABITAT: Found in lowland habitats including gardens, farmland, woodlands, wetlands and around the coast. FLIGHT PERIOD: On the wing during July and August. STATUS: Common and widespread but localised in Scotland.
